Darmstadt/Shanghai, September 28, 2013 – The Dürr Group commissioned its new mechanical engineering site in Shanghai at the end of September. After the final expansion phase, this modern industrial complex in the district of Baoshan will offer 22,000 square meters of production space and 7,400 square meters for offices. At Baoshan, Dürr is bringing its business with balancing, cleaning and filling technology together with testing and assembly products under the single umbrella of Schenck Shanghai Machinery Ltd. From its new base, Dürr plans to further expand its operations in China. The Baoshan site is also the hub for further expansion in Southeast Asia. Currently, Dürr employs some 600 staff in its mechanical engineering operations in China, with plans to expand the new site to accommodate up to 1,000 employees by 2015.

Speaking before an audience of around 600 invited guests and employees, Dürr AG CEO Ralf W. Dieter declared: “Dürr has been operating successfully in China for 30 years. The new site is proof that we continue to have every confidence in the strength of this market.”

Up till now, Dürr China’s mechanical engineering activities were scattered over three sites in Shanghai. Dr. Ralf-Michael Fuchs, CEO of Carl Schenck AG and Head of the Measuring and Process Systems division: “By bringing everything together on our new site in Baoshan, we will achieve synergy effects in logistics, manufacturing, engineering and administration and will be able to support our customers even more efficiently in future.”

Schenck RoTec builds around 1,000 balancing machines a year in China for customers from the automotive and general industries and exports approx. 30% of its production. Dürr Ecoclean supplies its Chinese customers with Chinese-made cleaning machines.

In testing technology, Dürr Assembly Products supplies test stands for end-of-line quality assurance in automotive production, for example chassis geometry test stands plus roller-type and function test stands. The customers include both purely Chinese automakers and joint ventures with foreign manufacturers. In the filling technology segment, Dürr Somac supplies the Chinese automotive industry with locally developed systems from its Baoshan base. Group company Agramkow has a strong market position in China for filling systems for the electrical appliance sector – for example, household appliances and air-conditioning systems.

Dürr is represented by all the necessary departments in Baoshan for its mechanical engineering operations. These include sales and service, but also engineering, purchasing, project management and production. Furthermore, Schenck Shanghai Machinery is one of the few German machinery manufacturers with a local product development in China. Current examples of locally designed products include the RBTU balancing machine from Schenck RoTec for electric armatures and the EcoCAgile cleaning system by Dürr Ecoclean for engine blocks.

The Dürr Group has had local sales offices in China since the mid-1980s. Schenck sold its first balancing machine to China as long ago as 1952 and launched its first production operation for balancing machines in China in 1991 in a 50:50 joint venture. Eight years later Schenck Shanghai Machinery Ltd. was set up as a subsidiary of Carl Schenck AG.

The early entry into the market laid the foundation for Dürr/Schenck’s position today as the clear market leader in almost all business segments in China. Beyond Shanghai, a network of 13 sales and service branches with a total of 60 staff ensures proximity to customers in the mechanical engineering field. These branches are based in all the Chinese industrial centers, such as Chengdu, Chongqing, Dalian, Shenyang, Guangzhou and Changchun.

Dürr has recently seen a significant expansion in its business in China. Between 2005 and 2012, Group sales there increased from € 83 million to € 730 million. The Measuring and Process Systems division, which represents the mechanical engineering business of the Dürr Group, achieved sales € 135 million in China in 2012. Overall Dürr employs approximately 1,750 people (incl. external staff) in China. The Group moved into a further new production site in Shanghai for its plant engineering operations back in March 2012. This offers 13,000 square meters of additional production space and 3,000 square meters of office space.
